We are excited to present ‘It's all about the feelings...’ creative research project led by Beverley Hood, at Inspace on Friday the 23rd of June.
How does sentiment recognition technology actually work and how accurate is it? What affect will it have on our near futures and behaviours?
This free event will explore how we can utilise creative research methods to create better understanding of AI and emotional recognition systems. The aim of the project is to stimulate public and industry consideration of algorithmic biases, as highlighted by academic research, and think about appropriate, fair real world application and uses of AI technologies.
‘It’s all about the feelings…’ is a creative research project led by Beverley Hood, an artist and Reader in Technological Embodiment & Creative Practice at the University of Edinburgh, featuring actor, Pauline Goldsmith and PhD candidate in Science, Technology and Innovation Studies, Benedetta Catanzariti.
The project is part of the The New Real programme on Experiential AI, with additional support from TramwaySupports, Edinburgh College of Art, the Edinburgh Futures Institute, the Centre for Data, Culture & Society, Creative Informatics and Cove Park.

Speakers
Beverley Hood is an artist and Reader in Technological Embodiment & Creative Practice, at Edinburgh College of Art, University of Edinburgh. Her work interrogates the impact of technology and science on the body, relationships and our lived experience, through the creation of digital art, performance projects and writing. Her practice is interdisciplinary and research-led, undertaken in collaboration with a range of practitioners, including medical researchers, scientists, technologists, actors and composers. Her work has been performed and exhibited at international museums and arts venues, as well as non-typical venues, such as medical simulation centres.
Pauline Goldsmith is a Belfast born actress based in Glasgow. This year she performed Vanishing Point’s Interiors at the Barbican and she has just finished a critically acclaimed new version of Debbie Tucker Green’s play Hang at the Tron Theatre. Pauline was recently part of the Olivier award winning Baby Reindeer team and she is also a creative associate with Vanishing Point, an occasional stand up and has tour an Irish wake show which she has toured internationally in a hearse! Pauline has worked for extensively as an actor in Scotland for nearly 3 decades.
Benedetta Catanzariti is a PhD candidate in Science, Technology and Innovation Studies at the University of Edinburgh. Her research explores the social and political dimensions shaping the design and development of AI/ML systems. Her work sits at the intersection of STS and feminist studies and explores the material practices, histories, and epistemologies of computer vision technology.
